Why You Should Know Your Genotype Before Marriage

Haemoglobin genotype describes the type of haemoglobin in your red blood cells. The common results are AA, AS, AC, SS and SC.

Why it matters

When both partners carry the sickle cell trait, each pregnancy carries a risk that the child will have sickle cell disease. Knowing both genotypes early allows couples to make informed decisions with proper counselling.

When to test

  • Before marriage or before planning a pregnancy
  • When your genotype has never been confirmed by a laboratory test
  • Alongside a blood group test, which is also useful in emergencies

The test is quick and requires no special preparation. See our laboratory services or book a visit.
